What is an IBAN?
An International Bank Account Number (IBAN) is a globally standardized bank account identifier used for international bank transfers. It is made up of a combination of up to 34 letters and numbers, helping banks process transfers across the globe.
Instead of relying only on an account number, IBANs include:
- Country code
- Check digits
- Bank identifier
- Branch identifier (where applicable)
- Customer account number
This standardized format helps banks correctly identify accounts across borders, reducing payment failures and processing delays.
From local bank details to a valid IBAN in four simple steps
1. Select your country. Every country follows a unique IBAN format - pick yours and the right fields appear.
2. Enter your local bank details. Input your bank code, branch code (if required), and account number.
3. Generate your IBAN. The calculator applies the country's official IBAN structure and computes the check digits.
4. Verify before sending. Always confirm the IBAN with the recipient or their bank - correct formatting doesn't guarantee the account exists.
Small code, big consequences
International payments fail surprisingly often because of incorrect banking information. Using the correct IBAN helps:

80+ countries & territories use IBAN
The number shows each country's IBAN length - tap a country to open it in the calculator or preview an example in the checker. Countries like the United States, Canada, and Australia don't use IBAN - they rely on routing numbers, BSB codes, and SWIFT instead.
Two codes, two jobs
Many people confuse IBANs and SWIFT codes. An IBAN pinpoints the exact account; a SWIFT/BIC code identifies the bank itself - and many international transfers need both.
| IBAN | SWIFT/BIC |
|---|---|
| Identifies a specific bank account | Identifies a bank |
| Used to route payments to an account | Used to identify the receiving institution |
| Up to 34 characters | 8 or 11 characters |
| Required in many international transfers | Often used alongside an IBAN |
Inside a global IBAN

Run against a MOD-97 algorithm to catch 99% of user input typos.
Identifies the specific clearing institution handling the fund ledger.
The core localized bank account number assigned to the individual entity.
Where can you find your IBAN?
You can usually find your IBAN in your online banking portal, mobile banking app, bank statements, or account details provided by your bank. If you're unsure, your bank can confirm the correct IBAN for your account.
You can also use Echo Money's IBAN tools to validate the format and better understand the structure of an IBAN before making an international payment.
Important to know
A valid IBAN format does not necessarily mean the bank account exists or that the IBAN belongs to the intended recipient. IBAN validation only checks whether the number follows the correct country-specific structure and checksum rules.
Before sending or receiving an international payment, always confirm the IBAN directly with the recipient or their bank to help avoid payment delays, failed transfers, or funds being sent to the wrong account.
